I cannot believe the Blowout is already here. Seems like it was just XXXmas! Nonetheless, Elizabitch has done her research and has some suggestions on bands to see this year. It's number 13 so hell, it better be good, right?

For those of you not in the know, the Blowout is a 4-day fest of local Detroit music. Held primarily in the enclave of depravity we call Hamtramck, the Blowout features 200 bands in 15 venues, all generally within walking distance (there's also a tram for slackers). Admission is $20 for a weekend wristband that get you into any and all participating venues. The weather usually sucks but it is always a good time nonetheless.

Obviously, it is impossible to see everything so I've taken the liberty of making some suggestions for each night. With so many cool bands to see, you're gonna have to make some tough decisions but I've tried to narrow it down a bit for ya.

Wednesday, March 3: Pre-party
Held at the Majestic Complex, the pre-party (otherwise known as the Schmoozefest) is a showcase of bands the folks at MT have decided are "representative" of the past year's MT coverage. Two bands worth braving the schmooziola are The Displays (straight up rawk ala Sights) and Chapstik (face-melting heavy ROCK). Both bands are playing the Magic Stick big stage at 12 & 12:45, respectively.

Thursday, March 4
In my opinion, the Thursday lineup tends to be weak and I usually need a day to recover from the schmooze, but here are a handful of bands you might want to catch:
SNAKEWING (Small's 8:40), INVADER (Small's 10:40), THE CROOKS(Painted Lady 10:20), BLACK IRISH (Painted Lady 11:20), THE PHAGE (New Dodge 11pm) & 60 SECOND CRUSH (New Dodge @ Midnight), THE HADITUPTOHERES (Belmont @ Midnight) and Fur (Atlas Bar @ Midnight).

Friday, March 5
This is a night of tough choices because all the good bands seem to be playing around the same time so I've narrowed it down by venue. You might want to pick one and just park it.

This Saturday night, 2/27/10, Real Detroit Weekly is hosting their 11th Birthday "Break" party.

The event takes place at the Majestic Complex, 4140 Woodward Avenue, Detroit.

There are definitely some acts worth seeing, The Muggs, The Hell Drivers, Gorevette and Black Irish. I am, however, flabbergasted by the headliner....ICP. Yes, I know the "kids" like em but... it seems like a strange and uncomfortable melange. But then again, there's definitely something for everyone in the mix!

So no matter who you are and what you're into, its probably a good bet to head on down to the Majestic on Saturday and scope out the festivities. The lineup DEFINITELY promises to be entertaining.

I'd personally like to see a gang fight...Rockers VS. Juggalos. TEAM ROCK will kick some Clown Ass!

What happens when you take the legendary pop~rock songstress Nikki Corvette (Nikki Corvette and the Stingrays) add Amy Gore, the guitar wielding powerhouse behind the Internationally known Gore Gore Girls, mix in Lianna Gore (Gore Gore bassist) and the drum thumping Al King?

The answer is Gorevette, and they are creating a buzz around the D. An addictive blend of pop, punk and rock, Gorevette's tunes will make you bounce or at least bob your head to the beat. This Friday the East Quad Music Co-Op's Halfass will be bringing down the house Motor City style, with three of the D's hottest homegrown bands, undoubtedly on the frontline of Detroit's current hybrid era of rock and roll.

The Muggs, with their blues influenced rock and roll, are critically acclaimed- locally by Real Detroit as 2009's Best Indie Rock Band and internationally, receiving raving reviews in French, Spanish, and Swedish music magazines.

Gorevette is a supergroup formed of known Detroit faces, including Detroit rock legend Nikki Corvette (Nikki and the Corvettes), Amy Gore, Lianna Castillo (Gore Gore Girls) and Al King (Powertrane).This band delivers the unique fusion of hard driving rock and punk sounds that will please the ears of any Detroit music fan.

The Crooks were described in Metro Times by music producer Kim Fowley as 'high school boys who play like Led Zeppelin." All under 18 and already making waves within and outside of the Detroit music scene, these legends in the making are a must-see.

Last night I went to see Mastodon on the “Adult Swim Presents” tour. I had my reservations because it was a Cartoon Network thing but I really wasn’t quite prepared for the reality.

It started out weird. Security was really tight. "This is a metal show, maam" the security woman(?) told me as she confiscated my keychain bottle opener. I've been to shows at the Fillmore and all over and NEVER have I been given shit for a bottle opener. I informed her that i could shank someone much better with my actual KEY as she grabbed my bra and shook it out. Okay. So I was curious what all the fuss was about.

HA! It was a dorkfest, first of all. Because Dethklok was “playing”, the majority of the audience were late-night Adult Swimmers who don’t have anything better to do on Friday nights but watch TV and play video games, apparently. In fact, most of them didn’t seem to know who Mastodon even was.

It was marketed toward kids and “grown” kids of the gaming ilk. They had video game demos set up and were aggressively pushing the new game, Brutal Legend. I found that intensely annoying. There was even a fucking commercial shown before Dethklok took the stage.

The whole thing just bummed me out. Mastodon is such a good band and it sucked to see them whoring themselves out like that. Of course they played well, they are great musicians, but it was definitely without passion. Perhaps knowing that they’ve sold their souls has stolen their fire. Or maybe it’s the knowledge that 90% of the audience on the tour is there to see a cartoon band and not them. Either way, it’s a bummer.

Last weekend, October 10 & 11, I got to meet and hang out with my favorite band of all time, Cock Sparrer. It was an epic weekend of drinking and jackassery never to be forgotten.

The event was Riotfest in Chicago and although it was a 4 hour drive out there from Ann Arbor, it was well worth the time and gas spent. And shit, the band flew all the way from the UK so how could we complain about a 4 hour drive!

My friend Wendy and I were lucky enough to be put on Cock Sparrer's guest list for both nights, with VIP all access. On Saturday, October 10th, we went to the show at the Congress. Unfortunately we got there really late and only got to see one band, NOFX. They were okay, but I was bummed that we missed Cock Sparrer. We watched the show from the "VIP Skybox" which actually means that you are far as hell up and away from the stage. Although we hadn't gotten to see Cock Sparrer's performance, we stopped by to say hello to them and say thank you for putting us on. After that, we jetted over to Subterranean to see the Aggrolites play.

On Sunday night, October 11, we attended the show at the Metro. What a scene it was! Punks and skins from all over the midwest had flocked there for the event. This time, we arrived in plenty of time, and even had a chance to say hello and take a few pictures with Steve Bruce, the drummer, before the show. I didn't watch ALL the bands, I managed to catch a bit to the Lower Class Brats performance in between my beer binging, and they were really good. Then it was time for Cock Sparrer to take the stage. I have to admit, I was totally geeked. I watched the performance from back (side) stage and it was awesome to see everyone in the audience screaming along to all the songs. Cock Sparrer RAWKED the house. It was the best show I've ever been to in my life. Afterward, Wendy and I hung out in the dressing rooms and drank beer with the lads, Colin McFaull, Steve Bruce, Steve Burgess, Mickey Beaufoy, Daryl Smith and Will Murray.

What awesome, nice and down-to-Earth guys they were. We talked about football (UK) bands, our lives and families and just really very ordinary things. It was like we'd been mates for years. I challenged Colin McFaull to a darts match but sadly, it never happened. Every so often, some other fans would come back there asking for pictures and autographs and all the guys were incredibly gracious and cool. After the venue closed and everyone was tossed out, we hung around a bit longer drinking way too many beers, before proceeding to the afterparty.

The party at Exit was a great time too. All our friends who'd come from Michigan were able to meet the band as well. Of course at that point the night becomes a bit hazy for me but in my opinion, that's just a sign of a good time! The whole experience was awesome. I feel so blessed to have been able to meet those guys and owe Steve a huge debt of gratitude for hooking us up.

The days are growing shorter and fall is creeping in. My carefree summer is about to end and I'll soon find myself behind a desk with creepy adolescent grins bearing down upon me. Okay, that's a little harsh but nonetheless, I mourn for summer like a lost love.

I've been remiss in my reports because, well, its summer and I'm lazy. Here's a recap of some of the cool things I've neglected to report.

1. Cafe Racer opening, last Saturday, August 15. Cafe Racer is a cool little cafe/vintage motorcycle shop that just opened in at 10 Cross Street, in Depot Town, Ypsilanti. Everyone's favorite twisted puppet show, the Gepetto Files awed, entertained and horrified (or is that whorified?) us with their creepy puppet show. They were great, as always. There were cool bikes of all ages, sizes, shapes and styles for all to see. DJ's Chuck Damage and Doubleplus spun some tunes and yes, there was some dancing.

2. It should also be noted that Depot Town Tattoo had and art show/opening that night as well. Located diagonally across the street from Cafe Racer, the shop is home to a couple of really great artists. Dawn Cooke, in particular, does a brilliant job with needle and ink. But skin is not her only medium, she's a painter as well and has some super cool pieces that I've seen.

Those 2 spots, as well as Fantasy Attic Costumes, are really helping make Ypsilanti a cool place like it was "back in the day". Sorry, I refuse to say Hipsilanti.

3. Elbow Deep. Held at the Elbow Room, 6 Washington Street, Ypsilanti, on the last Tuesday of every month, Elbow deep is Ypsi's answer to Necto Fridays. But different. I had heard it was a blast so last month, I donned my latex gloves, grabbed my KY Jelly and headed on up there. Well, it is called "elbow deep" so I just wanted to be prepared! My supplies weren't needed, sigh, but between The House of Chanel mini drag revue and all the dance hits spun by DJ Humanfly, it was a hoot nonetheless!

5. Ann Arbor reopening of Direct Hits Mod Night
Now at the Heidelberg in Ann Arbor. Come out and show your support!
Held on the last Thursday of every month, Mod Night pays tribute to the days of olde....meaning the late 50's-early 60's before the dirty hippies destroyed the world. Last month was the re-opening and featured a special theme: "MODS VS ROCKERS", sponsored by Cafe Racer, Orbit Hair Design, Fantasy Attic, and Underground Sounds. Mod night DJs faced off against a rockabilly DJ and a garage/glam rock band from Detroit.
Hipsters come dressed in retro/vintage 50's or 60's styles and you can also shop for vintage clothing and vintage scooters/cycles.

So whether you're looking to cut a rug, check out hags, fags and drags, cycles, tats or puppets....there's definitely cool shit to do in Washtenaw County. Just check back to find out.

Cock Sparrer is playing 2 dates at Riot fest in Chicago this October. This is something worth traveling for. Anyone who knows anything about Britain's punk/oi scene knows this band. And they are, coincidentally, my favorite.

The Nuge Still Rawks

I've been on vacation and lazy as hell. But Friday night I was jolted back to life by the Amboy Dukes at the Detroit Music Awards. I confess that I didn't take my seat or watch the whole show but what I saw was enough to send me home stoked.

Truth be told, I watched only 2 acts; Powertrane's tribute to Ron Asheton and the Amboy Dukes. (I regret missing the Funk Brothers).

Powertrane (Scott Morgan, Robert Gillespie, Chris Taylor and Al King)played a kickass trio of Stooges tunes in tribute to Ann Arbor's homeboy Ron. Scott, a longtime friend of Ron's, was asked to perform at the DMA's after the word got out about the awesome show they put on at the Blind Pig in March.

Powertrane opened the set by cranking out a powerful "1969", then were joined on vocals by Hiawatha (of the Cult Heroes) for "Down on the Street" and "I Wanna be Your Dog". If you've never seen them play, I don't know what to tell you except that the name says it all. Sheer rock power, coupled with Hiawatha's undeniable charisma made for an electrifying combination. Aptly named, Powertrane gave a worthy performance in honor of their late friend.

I wandered backstage again to see the Amboy Dukes reunite onstage for the first time in 30 years. They played the show and were honored with a Distinguished Achievement Award. It was frickin awesome and they rocked it. R O C K. Never having seen the Nuge live, I wasn't sure what to expect. The man is a force to be reckoned with. He shredded on the guitar and his energy was magnetic. They played "Baby Please Don't Go", "Journey to the Center of the Mind" and then, with original Detroit Wheels drummer, John Badanjek sitting in, played "Jenny Take a Ride".

I was blown away. Shall I say it again? R O C K.

Ron Asheton Tribute Review

Last Saturday, February 28, I attended a Tribute to Ron Asheton at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. The show was pretty well publicized via newspaper and radio interviews as well as on IggyPop.org and The Stooges Official Myspace page. So I wasn’t surprised when I arrived at 9:00pm (doors were at 9:30) to see a line stretching down the block and around the corner. At that point, I knew this would be a night to remember.

Indeed it was. This was really a true gathering of friends. Just about everyone involved has some connection with Ron, be it as a friend, bandmate or even relatives of friends and bandmates. Scott Morgan, who played in such bands as The Rationals, Sonics Rendezvous Band and others, hosted the event along with his current band, Powertrane. Besides Scott, who was a longtime friend, other members of Powertrane have connections to Ron. Chris “Box” Taylor, the bass player, who helped put together the event, was a friend and neighbor of Ron’s and drummer Al King is nephew of Rob King who played with Ron in a post-Stooges project called Destroy All Monsters. See the connections? And that’s just the first band.

Powertrane opened the show with a bang. In addition to their standard lineup of Scott Morgan (guitar and vocals), Robert Gillespie (lead guitar), Chris Taylor (bass) and Al King (drums), this special event also featured Hiawatha of the Cult Heroes (another of Ron’s friends from back in the day) on vocals for the three Stooges songs they performed; Down on the Street, 1969 and I Wanna be Your Dog. Although they only played 3 songs, those songs rocked and really set the tone for the night.

The second band, Kyoto Cutout, is also not without personal connections to Ron. The band’s bass player, Theresa Taylor was also a friend and neighbor to the late great Mr. Asheton. The band’s lineup also includes Karen Renko (guitar, vocals,) and Mike Arms (drums). Once again, this band drew from the past and present and included a couple of special guests when they played “Nobody Knows”, a Destroy All Monsters tune. For that song, Mike, the band’s drummer, stepped aside and Rob King, the original drummer from Destroy All Monsters, took to the skins. Chris “Box” Taylor (Powertrane, Mazinga) played lead guitar and Al King (PowerTrane, Mazinga, Dead Ringers, Gorevette, 77’s) took the stage playing rhythm guitar. The result was powerful.

My Biography, the third band to take the stage includes Lawrence Miller who also played with Ron in Destroy All Monsters. Their set included two Stooges songs: Little Doll, and We will Fall.

Mazinga, a local punk band whose music draws heavily upon Stooges influence was the fourth band to take the stage. The Mazinga boys; Marc McFinn (vocals), Chris Taylor (guitar), Tony Fero (bass) and Al King (drums) literally blasted the audience with their intensity. Then Marc, the band’s singer, had a little surprise for us all when he removed his robe and ripped off his shirt to reveal the message “we love you Ron” scrawled upon his flesh. Then in an apparent homage to Iggy, he proceeded to douse himself with syrup and spread his belly with peanut butter. Now I love spectacle so I thought it was great because hey, the guy was showing love! Their tribute piece included a very interesting arrangement for which they too, had a special guest musician. Erin “Elvis” Cashin (Chapstik), stepdaughter of Ben Miller from Destroy All Monsters, niece of Lawrence Miller joined the boys for a TV Eye sandwich. The arrangement began with their own original song, Thorium Orbiter, then halfway through, Mazinga powered right into TV Eye after which they went seamlessly back into the final portion of Thorium. It was very cool.

Up next came The State; a hardcore/punk band that’s been drawing fans for 20+ years. Preston, Art and guest drummer Jef Jenkins (Versificators) rocked the joint with a little help from sax player Gabe Heiss. Their tribute included Not Right, I got a Right and 1970. You’d never know that these guys have been rocking since the 70’s, they played with all the energy of 18 year olds.

Gorevette, a new Detroit band, was number 6 to take the stage. With a lineup that includes Amy Gore (Gore Gore Girls) on guitar, Nikki Corvette (Nikki and the Corvettes) on vocals, bassist Lianna Castillo (Gore Gore Girls) and drummer Al King, this band has been drawing lots of buzz around the D. They were absolutely adorable. Nikki’s bubblegum pop style juxtaposed with Amy’s rockin’ guitar creates a dynamic fusion that can be appreciated by rockers and popsters alike. In addition to their own songs, they played 2 Stooges songs; No Fun and Search and Destroy. Scenesters take note, this band is one to watch.

Last but certainly not least came the Cult Heroes, featuring Al King on drums. The band’s singer, the delightfully outrageous Hiawatha is a force unto himself and although it was not the band’s usual lineup, they did not disappoint. The Heroes rocked the Stooges’ “Loose”. They ended the show in true Rock N Roll Hall of Fame style with an “all-star” jam of “I Wanna be Your Dog” in which friends grabbed instruments and took the stage. From my vantage point at side stage, I could see the whole crowd and I don’t think there was one person who wasn’t singing along. You could feel the raw emotion in the air and it was all love. It was electric….a passionate and powerful ending to the night.

This was probably the best show I’ve been to in years….seriously. Kudos to everyone involved, most notably Scott Morgan, Chris Taylor, Jeremy Wheeler and Al King who all worked hard to make the event the success it was. There will never be anything like it and I’m stoked to have been there.

If you didn't go to the Bloody Valentine Massacre...

You're a FOOL! No, but you've been warned. Don't make the same mistake next year. The event, a Sweet Demonica production, was a blast! Walking into the Elbow Room, after passing the Zombie door dude, the first thing I saw was Ricki Dickerson, all decked out and ready to rock. DJ Scarboni and DJ Chuck Damage were playing s slew of fun but totally random tunes...I think I heard some Mitch Ryder folowed by the Misfits at some point. And yes, there may have been some singing along.

I sauntered up to the bar and ordered a Champagne of Beers then sat back to take in the scenery. What I saw were oodles of bloody guys and hot chicks in various "valloween" costumes. For many, this event was another excuse to dress slutty and smear oneself with blood. Hey I'm not judging, that's exactly what I did but without the blood;) The prize of the night would have to go to Amanda Zee, whose gory interpretation of Alice after smashing through the looking glass, was a spectacle to behold. With shards of glass protruding from her flesh, she still managed to look lovely.

Honorable mention goes to the band, Christpuncher. They looked like dirtball/metalhead transplants from 1981.

The first act were the Vamps of Valentine, a belly dancing troupe. To be honest, I really didn't watch them and stayed up at the bar. But if crowd shift is any indication then I would say it was probably pretty hot since 80% of the patrons moved in for a closer look.

Next up were the Gepetto Files puppets enacting a peculiar art/puppet show in which Vincent Van Gogh was drawing portraits of some unsuspecting victims. I didn't volunteer but you can always count on Ted to come up with something twisted for the puppets to do.

The main event of the night was the long-awaited reignition of Christpuncher. Ricki Dickerson, Fred Zepplin, Roxi Balboa and Fripp Ronson are back together to crank out their versions of 80's metal favorites. With new drummer, Fuckin' A and bass player, Bobby Hammersmith, the Christpuncher juggernaut hit the stage. In a word, they ROCKED. But I'm partial to the 70's/80's metal and was stoked for the band anyhow. The crowd was totally into the show and shit, I was right up front headbanging with the rest of them. The songs were favorites like Hell Bent For Leather, Love Gun and that song from Cheech and Chong, you know, the one where they win the contest? Well anyway, it was awesome. Fists were in the air, hair was flying and there was no shortage of horns being thrown.

3rd Annual Bloody Valentine Massacre

The countdown to the biggest chocolate holiday of the year has begun. I could bitch about how Valentine's day is a farce created to sell cards and candy and all that stuff. I could complain about how holidays like V day make people who aren't in relationships feel inadequate and depressed. Or I could wax poetic about the beauty of love between two people that culminates in a grande gesture on this day of love. But who the fuck am I kidding? To hell with all of it.
I'm counting down til the 3rd Annual Bloody Valentine Massacre. That's what I'm looking forward to! The return of Christpuncher has me stoked! When a friend first told me about CP and how much fun it had been when they played I was intrigued. Upon further investigation , I learned about the dressing up, which is right up my alley, and all the shenanigans involved in making CP the spectacle its meant to be. Who doesn't love 70's and 80's metal covers performed by some of our favorite local rockers.....in costume!

The cast of characters is:

Ricki Dickerson - Lead Vocals
Roxi Balboa - Guitar
Fuckin' A - Drums
Bobby Hammersmith- Bass
That's right, I wanna see Elvis in her Roxy Balboa wig, Leighton with an inverted cross shaved in his chesthair and Andy in the notorious leather pants. I can't wait to see Box belting out Hell Bent for Leather, banging his wig-covered head. And this new lineup features Downtown Jess on bass and my favorite drummer, Al King.

But that's not all the Bloody V entails....there will be hot, sexy dead burlesque dancers, DJ's Chuck Damage and Scarboni spinning tunes as well as a performance by the Gepetto Files puppets to creep you out.

This is NOT a show to be missed! This is what V day is about, screw the chocolates...gimmee the blood!

There's no dearth of Blogs around the D, I know. However, I like to play in Ypsi~A2 and I feel like the bar/band scene out here is under-represented. So in an effort to remedy that situation I'm taking on the task of compiling and reporting the musical shenanigans going on in my neck of the woods. I have no idea what I'm doing so bear with me....it's a work in progress.

I'll start with next weekend's events and go from there. Stay tuned to find out what all the kool kidz are doing.....
